The location and office are simple and unassuming, just like the service and value you'll get from John. He'll review all the work you need in detail before you authorize it, and then walk you through what he did when the work's done. On top of that, pricing is totally reasonable.

I've been using Luther's Garage for several years now and John, the owner is the most honest, fair and best priced mechanic in Connecticut. He recently replaced an axle on our Passat for much less (half) what the dealership quoted us and the car runs better than ever now. He takes care of both our cars, one having almost 200,000 miles on it and he not only saves us money on the general maintenance and repairs but we don't have to buy a new car for sometime thanks to his honesty and quick repair time. He's been changing our oil regularly and we purchase his "L-paks" which also saves us money too. He's worth the drive from anywhere in CT-we live in North Haven. I'll never use any other mechanic as long as we live in this state. Give him a try, you'll thank yourself for your great decision.

I met John and Debi through volunteering with them for the Halloween Bash II.
At that time I was having my car serviced at another shop. When I had a falling out with that other shop due to some bad service, I started taking my car to John. I was very impressed with John from the very start. He is very professional, has checked my car several times (for safety issues) and not charged me for it. He has ALWAYS been very upfront with me in regard to when repairs are needed (if they need to be done right now or I can hold off for a little while) and has been accommodating as far as when I can bring my car in for its regularly scheduled oil changes. And the prices are much more reasonable than the other shop I was going to, let alone the dealership. (I didn't state that I have a ten year old Mercedes so yes he does work on foreign cars.) All in all, I would recommend John and Luther's Garage to anyone looking for honesty and integrity in car repairs or regularly scheduled maintenance.

Recently I scheduled an appointment with Luther’s to have some preventive work done on my car. This work included a tune-up, fuel filter change, a check of my car’s electrical system, amongst other things.
When John was through looking at my car, he called to tell me that I did not need to have any of those things done at that time. When I picked up my car later that evening John told me that there was no charge. He basically said; pay me when there is something that needs to be fixed! Now that’s honesty.
I will definitely be back to Luther’s and I will continue to tell my friends about Luther’s as well.

I love Luther's garage for many a reason. :-) I like the fact that John doesn't treat me like some dumb girl. If there is a part that needs to be replaced not only does he show the broken part to me but also explains what, how and why on the broken piece. The fact that he takes the time to keep me posted and all is just a great reason to keep coming back and I have been for a few years now. :-) Even when he's frustrated, he doesn't give up- those dang Chevy Cavaliers!!!! I have used Luther’s Garage for several of my car repairs and oil changes. John has been great in making sure I understand exactly what he is doing. He will take me out to the car and explain and show me what he means before making any repairs. Being a woman it is very hard to find a mechanic that I can trust. I feel that John is very trustworthy and would not try to do any work that I didn’t absolutely need. Plus Luther’s is always offering great coupons and offers on their website. I have recommended Luther’s Garage to a few friends and they have all had similar experiences.

My son has his truck in Syracuse. The brakes aren’t working well, so he brings it to a Midas shop. He is an 18 yr old college student.
Midas gives him a quote for $1700 for brakes. On a 2005 truck with 33,000 miles. I have the quote faxed to me in CT and bring it to John Landry of Luther’s Garage. John does all of my repair work and he is one of the most honest, nicest people I know.
I need John to tell me if I’m getting taken advantage of…..
John reviews the quote, tells me it’s not right and then PICKS UP THE PHONE AND CALLS MIDAS IN SYRACUSE. He wants Midas to explain to him why they are charging $1700 for brakes for a good customer of his. He tells Midas what to check, what to do, and Midas gives him attitude. So, he starts yelling at the Midas guy -and I quote “You are the reason why mechanics get a bad name”.
After talking to John, I find a local mechanic in Syracuse. Family owned, been around for 80 years and they give Syracuse students a discount. Not sure yet how this story will end, But I ask you……

I met John and Deb by accident< while I was working for a co-worker. My car was over due for an oil change and the idiot lights kept coming on I asked if he could check it out. I was referred to John by a friend, who spoke highly of him. I was impressed from the first phone call. He was friendly and didn't talk down to me because I'm female. We made an appointment for the next business day for him to inspect a car I was considering buying. When I got to the garage, he was on time and had the patience of a saint, going through my entire checklist and explaining everything to me. He spent well over an hour with me and gave me pointers on negotiating tips, which ultimately saved me an additional $500 on the price of the car. If this is how he does business with someone who doesn't even own a car yet, I look forward to being a customer. Oh - and the only payment he would accept for his time is a donation to a local children's charity. Competent and a good guy - how can you beat that combo? I took my scout troop to Luthers for badge work and they used my car for the guinea pig and I got a free oil change. I bought a car that was John's about four years ago. It was 10 years old and EVERYTHING was in perfect working order and the price was below any dealers in the valley. Four years later it still runs great and has needed nothing more than oil changes (always done by John). Since the sale he works on both my cars and my son's cars. John is smarter than the average mechanic and you learn so much when he tells you what he is doing (if you stop by just to say hello). Luther's has worked on my car as well as my fiancee's. Both times, John explained in detail what was wrong with our cars and what needed to be done to fix it. He also noted items that should be fixed at some point, but did not pressure us to have the repairs done since they weren't necessary at the time. i had been going to a particular garage for years, even though the work was good and the garage was close, because of an unprofessional attitude i recieved from the owner I knew the time had come to look around for a new mechanic, thats when i found john. February 28, 2006 Ray I have a 93 Lincon Continental. There was alot of problems with the air suspention. John explain to me about a conversion kit, so I had John convert the air ride to the regular suspension. My brakes started making some bad noises on the weekend. I called Luther's on Monday morning to see what day that week they could look at it. John told me to bring it down. Within 5 hours he had the front brakes done, the rears cleaned and adjusted, and the oil changed. This had already blown me away, but it didn't stop there. John took the time to show me the old parts and explain what was going on-I can't remember the last time I was shown the old parts. Also, John refused to "just go ahead and fix it" until he had talked to me and made sure I understood what was wrong. My husband is a backyard mechanic and has a difficult time in turning our vehicles over to someone to work on. That is no longer an issue. I will cast my vote to any business that gives back to the community. Here in town, we have the Wiffle Ball factory, in my entire life, I am not aware of that family giving anything back to Shelton. Luther's Garage ran a program to give back to those who need it most. And in addition, offered 1/2 price oil changes !!. I went to Luther's based on an article from the CT Post....he seemed like a nice guy working hard to establish his business. Although not all "nice guys" are necessarily good mechanics (or businessmen for that matter), John appears to be both. As a woman, I liked the fact that he spoke to me directly (not my male partner who was with me at the time) about my beloved 98 Wrangler which was having "some issues". We're back up and running and I will not hesitate to return in the future. Just wish he serviced air conditioning! I definitely would recommend to family and friends.
